Bristol Dogs and Cats Home has been overrun with rats… of the domestic kind! The recent influx of over 20 domestic rats has taken the rescue centre’s new small animal unit to breaking point, and they are now appealing for loving homes for these new arrivals.
RSPCA Inspectors and Animal Welfare Officers were called to a property in Bristol where the owner could no longer cope, having allowed his few pet rats to breed until the situation was out of control.
Lee Coombs, Assistant Manager at the Home said “The rats had been allowed to run free in the property where they had begun breeding under the sofa, in the wardrobe and even in the kitchen units!”
Bristol Dogs and Cats Home, part of the RSPCA Bristol Branch, took as many as they were physically able to manage. Others were then taken to neighbouring animal centres. The Home is now in desperate need for new owners to come forward to rehome these friendly little creatures which range in age, colour and gender.
Lee continued, “Despite their start in life, all the rats appear to be friendly and well adjusted! There are all different ages and we are able to accommodate anyone looking for a single rat, pairs or even a group of rats. The only one who not so sociable, but who likes human company, is a giant rat we have affectionately named Big Daddy! He is hand tame and very friendly and we are appealing to anyone who would like to offer him or his 19 brothers and sisters a loving new home, to get in touch.”
Bristol Dogs and Cats Home is also home to 80 small animals including rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets, mice, birds and of course rats. Their new Small Animal Unit was completed in 2010 and provides the perfect environment for people to view these special, often overlooked, residents of the Home.
